I used to stand in front of the full length mirror, phone in hand. I was hesitant, I was unsure. I adjusted, pivoted, contorted… looking for the best angles, looking for a pose that shaped my body into something as close as possible to the glossy, celluloid bodies I see on the daily, in every form of media. I focused in on every curve and every dimple, feeling less than because I didn’t look like a curated Instagram feed of professionally edited photos.

If I only weighed 10lbs less.

If only my waist was a bit smaller.

If only my chest was a big bigger.

If only my skin was always perfect.

If only…

As women, we all scrutinize ourselves. We are conditioned and socialized to seek perfection; a standard that has been set by industry and media and that we impose on ourselves daily. All we see is the space between what we are and what we are told we should be.

We need to let this go. I am learning to do this a bit more every day. It is a habit, a practice, a meditation. I have to consciously choose to accept myself and give myself grace. It’s been a long journey that continues to this day and something I have to do with intention and gentleness for myself.

I have been doing sports since I was a kid. My athletic journey has taught me a lot about my body. It has taught me to appreciate and celebrate it for what it can do for me as opposed to what it looks like. I learned body awareness, strength, agility and a respect and gratitude for how my body performs.

As women, we are bombarded with images of “perfect” bodies and constantly told of new body parts to be ashamed of should they not have the “ideal” look. I started moving away from seeing myself as an object, as material, and started experiencing my body as a powerful machine that keeps me strong, protects me and allows me to experience the world. The empowerment this change in mindset has brought me has resonated into every aspect of my life.

There’s comes a point where we have to simply refuse – refuse to play the game, refuse to let it diminish us, refuse to value ourselves based on impossible aesthetics and physical expectations. Here’s a life hack for fitting into pants that are too tight… get a bigger size ;)

Now, I stand in front of the mirror and I see strength, I see resilience. I see a heck of a lot of growth. I see all the hardships I’ve overcome, all the moments I’ve survived.

To be honest, when I began Midori sustainability was not at the top of my list. Quality, however, was.

In researching fabrics, I was shocked to see how many brands used standard swim material made in the most cost-saving ways. Prioritizing profit over customers seemed common but that wasn't the way I wanted Midori to function. In 2013 I came across Xtra Life Lycra, a fabric that is OEKO-TEX 100 Certified, has CO2 Control, and is eco-friendly. Bravery. If you are like me and didn't grow up wearing cheeky bikinis, you've likely experienced the temporary discomfort of putting one on that is far too small for your tan lines.

Bravery. That is where my journey to confidence began.

Here are 5 postures I like to do before bed, just 10 minutes of your time!

These postures have loads of benefits, but specifically, they work to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which can aid in better quality of sleep! This can leave you feeling more rejuvenated and energetic for whatever the day has in store for you, and possibly will allow you to kick that 3 pm, “I need more coffee, or chocolate, or a nap, or all of it!” slump! Yoga before bed can also aid in the actual act of falling asleep more promptly, while also keeping you asleep- minimal tossing and turning and checking the clock. So roll out your mat or hop into bed- because you can do these postures anywhere, and surrender your body and mind to a practice that will set you up for a sleepFULL night. 

Child’s Pose (Balasana)

Start in a table top position. As you sink your hips back in space, let your knees fall out wide and bring your toes to touch. Allow your hips to rest towards your heels, as you walk your arms forward. Your palms can rest on the ground beneath you- invite gravity to do the work, as your forehead rests on the ground. Focus on your breath. Options include rolling the forehead side to side, walking your finger tips to one side then the other (creating some side stretching), or letting your arms come back by your sides.

Legs Up The Wall (Viparita Karani)

I prefer to do this on a hard ground, but I know many who like to do it in bed- your choice! Come to a seat facing a wall and slide your bum towards the wall. Roll one vertebrae at a time down on to your back and inch yourself closer to the wall. Let your legs go straight up the wall. Options include opening the legs into a straddle position for some passive stretching or focusing on the breath with your hands on your belly.

 Supine Twists (Supta Matsyendrasana 2)

I have a deep love hate with supine twists- but if you are a desk worker- this one is for you (but truly great for everyone!) Twists have so many benefits! I like to start on my back and bring myself into a tight ball- giving myself a hug. Scoot your hips to one direction and let your knees fall in the opposite direction. Allow your arms to take up space, in a T or goal post shape. Tip: play around with the positioning of your legs to find the most comfortable and sustainable twist for you.

Reclining Bound Angle (Supta Baddha Konasana) 

If you have yoga blocks- this is a favorite of mine to use props with! If you don’t, pillows or large books will also do! Recline onto your back, bring the palms of your feet together as your knees soften out wide. Place the prop under your upper outer thigh for extra support, or closer to your knee for less. If you feel open enough, you can experiment with no props. For even more of a calming sensation, this is a great posture to do some self massage into the hip flexors- a common place where we often carry tension!

Corpse Pose (Savasana)

“BuT iT’s JuSt LyInG DoWn?!” Yes… but also… not quite. Corpse pose is a posture of total stillness, but with that comes a surprising amount of concentration.. Aka mindfulness! Take your time getting into this posture, roll one vertebrae at a time, fidget and move until you feel as if you have found the optimum position to ensure a quiet state. My favorite meditative trick is to imagine each muscle group lighting up, starting with the muscles in my toes and feet, and working up my body. Once each muscle group has “lit up”, I mentally ask it to release any last bit of tension it might be holding on to. Toes to the head, gift yourself a bit of stillness before you sleep.

(Why yes, I do live in Southern California.) Regardless of where you live, winter can be a divisive season- maybe you love the change of pace, the crisp, the cold- or maybe you’re ok with a few days of wearing your winter layers, but you quickly crave the summer sun.

No matter what your opinions are about the seasons, with changes in temperature and climate, comes changes to our skin!

Skin Care in the Winter

Did you know that during the colder months, our skin loses up to 25% of its ability to hold moisture?

But don’t worry- with my tips and tricks- we will keep your skin soft, glowing, and completely manageable! I feel like I am not alone when I say that I don’t have time for an extravagant skin care routine- but simple doesn’t mean ineffective!

Below I have my top tips for keeping your skin shining, even when the sun isn’t.

 

Let’s dive in! Here’s the line up:

Hydrate, Cleanse, Moisturize, Upkeep. 

Hydrate.

It’s hard to talk skin care without discussing hydration. I get it, when it's cold outside, you are less likely to reach for your water bottle and chug it. But staying hydrated is easily the most important and vital step to keeping glowing skin year round.

Bored of water? Change it up- think tea, fruits, vegetables! Or make your classic cup of water feel vacation-esque by adding your favorite fruit to the mix- hello lemon and strawberries!

Cleanse & Exfoliate.

We all know skin is our largest organ, and often the health of our insides is portrayed through the health of our skin. So, when it comes to cleansing- we have to think from the inside out! Eating a mineral and nutrient dense diet will help your skin glow, but it doesn’t end there!

Don’t forget about the magic of a good exfoliant! During the dry months, we don’t want dry skin to stand in the way of you feeling confident! By exfoliating the dead skin on the surface, this will allow for moisturizer to properly absorb! I recommend finding a face cleanser to use in the shower, making it a habit- exfoliant and cleanser in one? Even better!

Moisturize.

It can be overwhelming to find the ‘right’ moisturizer for your skin, and what it really comes down to is preference- how does it FEEL? For best results, apply your favorite oil or serum before bed and let your skin absorb the vitamins and minerals that your serum has to offer! I personally like to mix a drop or two of my favorite face oil into my moisturizer- it feels like the perfect blend that keeps my skin soft and dewy without feeling too oily.

 

Upkeep/Extra:

  • SPF- I know during the colder months, we don’t always think, “Sunscreen!”- but sun protection should be a year round pursuit!
  • Face masks- Whether you want to make a quick at home mask- think mashed avocado or a honey and sugar scrub- a weekly face mask can not only bring the spa life to your busy household, but a weekly deep dive into paying attention to your skin can do wonders.
  • Lip balm- Your skin is glowing, your health is beaming- don’t let cracked or chapped lips stand in the way of feeling confident! Whether you are a straight vaseline guy or gal or would prefer your favorite chapstick or lip balm- pucker up and apply!
Shower temp change- I know that in the winter long, hot showers can be a cure for many of the days’ stressors- however, I recommend ending with a short burst of cold water! A drastic change in temperature is not only great for skin health, but for all types of internal health- it boosts the immune system and increases blood flow and regulation- all great for longevity and anti-aging measures!

    I will be the first to tell ya you are far from alone if you’re feeling a bit out of sorts and have had low motivation since this worldwide pandemic began. It’s been a heavy last 7 months and we all cope with the stress differently. I can tell you from personal experience that even us peppy, seemingly “health-obsessed” personal trainers are struggling just as much with finding the motivation to do another at-home workout while continuing to eat healthy.

    With that confession out of the way, let’s chat about what we can do to increase our motivation and excitement when it comes to healthy habits!

    Give Yourself Grace

    First and foremost, I want you to pat yourself on the back for mentally (and

    physically) making it through the better half of the craziness which has captivated 2020. 

    Drinking Wine During a Pandemic COVID-19

    You may have turned to stress eating your favorite junk food, having *one more glass* of wine after dinner, or simply not moving your body because you couldn’t leave the house anyway to cope with COVID-19.

    Regardless of how you've dealt with it so far, accept your past actions and move on from them! Change can ensue if only you forgive yourself of any past “mistakes” and become determined to move on for the better of your mind + body.

    1. Habits > Motivation

    Motivation comes and goes, but habits tend to stick. For example, I may not be in the mood to brush and floss my teeth at night but I’ve done it since I was old enough to walk so no matter how “not in the mood” I am, I will always do it before bed.

    The truth is, if we wait until we are motivated to do something in life, we will never accomplish anything of significance. The power of habits is highly underrated! Once you have healthy habits established, you don’t need to wait on your motivation to come back- you simply follow through because you know the consequences of not doing something outweigh the inconvenience.

    2. You may not want to hear it but...

    Get your exercise! If you are so not into the workout-from-home thing and your gym is still closed, start with a good ol’ fashioned walk outside in the fresh air! You can call upon a friend for accountability to either walk with in-person or choose a time to chat on the phone while you both walk in separate locations. Start with just once a week even... but make it consistent and plan it in advance so you stick to it!

    3. Uber Eats from the couch, anyone?

    Have you been indulging in too many Uber Eats and not enough fresh greens? There are many alternative options including local meal services like Thistle (they deliver healthy, delicious, premade meals twice a week). If you just aren’t feeling that, head to Pinterest, research some seasonal, nutritious dishes, and make a few each week to get you excited about healthy eating again. (For the love of all things cheese and potatoes, healthy eating does NOT mean limiting yourself to bland meals like tilapia, broccoli and rice for every meal *cue gagging*!!).

    Eating Healthy During a Pandemic

    If you’re trying to maintain your weight or cut down, your best bet is paying attention to the portion sizes of your food, eating slowly without any distractions, and stopping before you reach that “stuffed” feeling. Yes, you can totally lose fat without cutting out your favorite meals! Shocking, I know. ;) 

    There are plenty of other “tricks” up my sleeve for how to revive some of your motivation, but I suggest starting with these 3 habits first. You might even find that by just by beginning to focus on one of these healthy habits, your motivation increases exponentially and you find yourself excited to start more!

    Remember, the slow implementation of habits is going to pay off way better in the long-term vs. the quick-fix mentality of doing it all at once (i.e. a 21-day challenge full of restriction and over-exercising). Enjoy getting back into your healthy routine and let me know how this goes for you!

    You’ve been giving this whole “workout thing” a try for the past few months now, or maybe even longer, but you still aren’t seeing physical results. You may have seen results initially but everything's come to a half and now you're at a plateau. What gives??

    There are so many factors that come into play to make or break your progress, whether your specific goal is weight loss, gaining lean muscle, getting stronger, or whatever else you want to get out of the gym. The plateau is when I see most people quite. I mean, what’s the point of trading Taco Tuesday plans for a grueling sweat sesh at the gym and protein shake waiting for ya at home if you're not seeing results, am I right?

    Over the last four years, many of my clients have found me after they tried to work out on their own with little to none or stalled progress.

    I always analyze a person’s current gym routine, eating and sleeping habits, medications, and stress levels to see what could be hindering them from getting some results. Based on what I’ve seen in the last few years, here are 3 habits that could be keeping you from results in the gym. 

    1. Your gym routine involves a high cardio to resistance training ratio. I see it time and time again… Especially when someone’s goal is weight loss, their primary activity is a long aerobic cardio session (also known as LISS) most days of the week, with maybe a few bicep curls, crunches and squats thrown in there after they hop off the treadmill. Of course, it’s great to be moving your body in any way you can, and you will probably even see some initial results by doing long cardio sessions at first. But a month or two into this, your body will most likely plateau and any muscle mass you already had will have dwindled away (say goodbye to those booty gains). Instead of low-intensity steady-state cardio 5 days a week with a couple of exercises thrown in there, try this:

    3-6 days a week of weight lifting (dedicating different days to different muscle groups) with 3-6 days of cardio (a mix of HIIT or high-intensity interval training and LISS or low-intensity steady-state). This means multiple days out of the week you may be performing both weight lifting AND cardio. My tip for you is for HIIT training days, just do a weight lifting circuit at a high enough intensity to count it as cardio too. ;) Much more efficient!

    2. You are still lifting the same amount of weight and doing the same routine as when you first started. If you’re still doing the exact same lower body, upper body, and cardio routine as when you first joined a gym, it’s no doubt that you 1. lack motivation to workout because you’re bored AF, and 2. are stalling your progress by not constantly making your body adapt to imposed demands. The gym sessions you have that include doing the same exercises, the more your muscles become used to it. The same goes for your heart during your cardio routine. If you hit the same RPM and use the same gears during each and every spin class, your body is going to get used to this and will eventually stop progressing.

    Now, when it comes to lifting the same amount of weight over and over again…  I know I know, you’re just trying to “tone”. Not a day goes by at the gym that I don’t hear someone describe their goals using that word. Not that it’s a bad word, it’s just that everyone has used it to justify not lifting heavy. “Heavy” is a subjective term, and it certainly doesn’t mean you’re going to turn into a female bodybuilder overnight from lifting heavier than you’re used to. Here’s a tip I give all my clients:

    Tune in to the last two repetitions of your lift. If you can complete those last two reps with ease or just a slight struggle, it’s time to move up in weight.

    There is this principle in exercise physiology called Progressive Overload. This basically means that unless you are constantly increasing the demands being placed on your body, it will stay exactly the same. If you are not increasing the number of reps you do or the weight you lift on an exercise every few weeks or so, your body will cease to progress.

    If you are not pushing yourself to run just a little bit faster or longer every other time you run sprints, your body will – once again - cease to progress, AKA plateau. One of my favorite sayings that couldn’t be more relevant to this topic is “great things never came from comfort zones.” Moral of the story: next time you’re about to pick up your usual 8-pound dumbbells, try grabbing the 10’s. 

    3. Your workouts are kick-a**, but your idea of a healthy diet is getting the small order of fries instead of the large. If you are killing it in the gym (and following my tips above), but aren’t practicing portion control, or are drinking the majority of your calories (this could be either alcohol OR those yummy PSL’s for all my basics out there) it’s unlikely you will get where you want to be physical if your goal is to lean out. You will start to see and feel a change in your body once you focus on consuming “clean” foods (AKA whole foods vs. processed foods) the majority of the time, and not trying to satisfy your cravings for sweets with “diet” foods that contain artificial sweeteners – just go for the real thing when the time comes for you to treat yourself!

    Try eating what your body needs to perform well in the gym, and seeing food more as nourishment versus satisfaction - you just might naturally see a difference in your eating habits without even needing to try counting calories or tracking macros!

    Do you know the techniques of  Proper Bikini Care?

    More often than not, bikinis are not properly cared for before you toss them back in a drawer after a long day out in the sun or at the pool.

    Keep your swim vibrant

    Swimwear fabric is made for both chlorine and saltwater but wearing your bikini over and over without washing won't ensure the longevity of your favorite pieces.

    The Easy Clean

    After a swim in the ocean, at the pool, or even just tanning in the sun, the easiest thing to do is simply rinse the bikini off!

    STEP 1. Grab a hose, go to a sink, or find a shower

    STEP 2. Rinse your swimwear thoroughly and drape it over a hanger or lay it flat in the shade to dry

    The Deep Clean.

    After a week or so of everyday wear, you may want to give your bikini a deeper clean.

    STEP 1. Fill your bathtub or sink with lukewarm water and a tablespoon of gentle liquid soap, avoiding laundry detergent and soaps containing moisturizers. We recommend a bikini wash like Bikinis Over Everything.
    STEP 2. Plug the sink or bathtub and mix the water and soap together thoroughly then toss your bikinis in.
    STEP 3. Let your bikinis soak for 5-10 minutes or until the water cools, then rinse out the bikinis and lay them on a clean towel. Fold the towel over them and press on them lightly to rid of excess water. Finish the process draping them in half over a hanger to air dry in the shade!

    Quick Bikini Wash Hack

    Need a quick, hands-free, easy way to clean your bikini?! Grab a delicates washable bag, throw your bikinis in it, and toss it into the washer!

    Use minimal detergent and wash with cool water on a delicate setting. (It's important to make sure bleach wasn't previously in the washer as that could irreversibly damage your bikini). Air dry your bikinis as shown in Step 3 above.

    Warning

    Dryers will ruin the elastic in your swimwear over time. Always dry your bikinis in an indoor or outdoor area with minimal sunlight to keep the elastic strong and the colors bright!

    (FYI this has nothing to do with being skinny)

    I'm 26 years young, and can FINALLY say with complete confidence and a positive body image that I am, well, confident. I look back on the last 10 years of my life and am saddened by the constant nagging in the back of my mind that I could've done so much more with that decade.

    Beginning at 12 years old, I had many insecurities from being isolated and made fun of. I wanted to be accepted so desperately but the harder I tried, the less people liked me. By high school, I outgrew the braces and glasses and was considered "cool," yet I still felt insecure. I wouldn't leave the house without makeup, wore push-up bras like my life depended on it, and never voiced my own opinions for fear of being judged.

    It's crazy to me now because I have a strong opinion on most things, am more independent than anyone I know, embody female empowerment, and can't remember the last time I wore makeup or a bra on a typical weekday.

    I refuse to let my worth be defined by anything superficial.

    There are plenty of days when I'm breaking out, feel bloated, or feel frumpy and would rather hide under a rock than go face the world, but life doesn't work that way. Those are the days when understanding how to build self-esteem becomes crucial. We don't get days off for "feeling ugly", and we shouldn't have to. Our confidence needs to come from within. So when I am feeling self-conscious for whatever reason, I have to let my inner light shine through and own it, because an amazing personality trumps a pretty face any day.

    From my personal experience, being confident comes from:

    (1) Practicing self-acceptance right where you are.
    Right now. Inside and out. Do it. You're awesome, I promise.
    (2) Surrounding yourself with friends and family that are supportive and uplifting.
    This one has made a HUGE difference in my personal life! You won't even realize how much certain people affect your self-esteem until they're out of your life and you're suddenly so much happier and more confident! Re-evaluating relationships and possibly cutting ties with anyone who makes you feel less than amazing. Because ain't nobody got time for that. *snaps fingers*
    (3) Engaging in confidence-building activities like physical exercise every day

    Dance, weightlifting, running, surfing, yoga, etc... It's a crazy phenomenon, but being active somehow gives you confidence in so many other facets of your life.
    (4) Wearing clothes you are comfortable and feel beautiful in.
    Disregard the passé trends of today, and focus on choosing closet staples that you thrive in.
    (5) Taking care of yourself.
    Carve out alone time every day if possible where you can pamper yourself mentally and/or physically. Take an Epsom salt bath, meditate, paint your nails, do something creative, read a book.
    (6) Not comparing yourself to all the "perfect" people on social media.
    Remember, comparison is the thief of joy!
    If necessary, delete all social media apps or unfollow certain accounts if you catch yourself making comparisons often. The Internet is an amazing tool, but can also be unrealistic and unhealthy.
    (7) Making time to do something that you're talented at every week.
    (8) Giving up the scale.
    If you have a weight loss goal, that's great! I hope you keep that motivation and drive towards optimal health, but rather than having a "goal weight," try taking body measurements or progress photos rather than being fixated on a specific number. If you're working out more, you will most likely gain muscle weight and the scale can be extremely misleading.
    (9) Living a life you're proud of.
    Would 10-year-old you be happy with how you've turned out? Did you forget about all your lifelong dreams because you are so wrapped up in the daily grind?

    As your quality of life goes up, so does your confidence (and vice versa).

    If you simply start to go down the checklist and implement one of these tips at a time, I guarantee you, that you'll start to love yourself so much more than ever before, fostering personal growth and living life to the absolute fullest.

    Wake up Slow

    We can all agree that there is truly nothing more incredible than waking up without an alarm in the morning. Unfortunately, many of us are without the option of the luxurious morning sleep in. Also, that whole “internal alarm clock,” isn’t really a thing, is it? Regardless of if you're waking up at 5 am to work early mornings, or sleeping until 11 am after a late evening shift at your job, the most important ingredient for a healthy morning routine is to give yourself time to wake up peacefully (even if that means setting your alarm 20 or 30 minutes earlier than usual.

    Each morning when you wake, take time to be still in your bed (or in your home) and allow your body to naturally adjust to the light, sound, and energy around you. Take it all in for a few moments. Morning has always been a powerful time in nature - the sun rises, the moon sets, tides change and animals in the wild begin their day.

    Allow your mind, body, and spirit to be aware of these shifts and give yourself space to breathe and awaken your body slowly before reaching for a cell phone (I like to keep mine turned off or on airplane mode for the first 30 minutes of every morning,) or staring at a computer screen for a quick e-mail check.

    Mornings are beautiful.
    Create space to let your morning be beautiful as well.

     

    Find your Flow

    Find something you enjoy doing every single morning and do it. Even if it is only for 20 minutes before you pack for work, school, or the gym.

    • Make a big mug of your favorite tea
    • Sit somewhere comfortable and journal for a few moments
    • Put on your favorite morning playlist
    • Enjoy a clay face mask
    • Massage your hands, face or feet
    • Or simply sit in bed and create a list in your head of all of the things you have to look forward to the day. Even if they’re not extraordinary or far from your usual routine. It all comes down to your perspective of how you wish to view the world and the situations around you.

    For example...

    “Today is going to be an incredible day. I slept well last night and feel so rested this morning. I am going to perform so beautifully at work today. I look forward to meeting some co-workers for a late lunch at a yummy cafe this afternoon. I am excited for the warm weather and sunshine that is on its way. I cannot wait to go out with girlfriends tonight and celebrate the weekend. Today is going to be an incredible day.”

    or even...

    “Today is going to be an incredible day. I went to bed late and didn't sleep well last night but I am grateful to be awake and alive early this morning. I love starting my day with the rising sun. I have a long list of errands to run today, but I am excited to be productive and get them out of the way. I am looking forward to squeezing in a yoga class at my favorite studio this afternoon. I cannot wait to watch the sunset during my long drive home. I look forward to having a healthy, home-cooked meal tonight, and am excited to crawl into bed early with my favorite book to catch up on much-needed sleep. Today is going to be an incredible day.”

    The more frequently and authentically you express gratitude for the good (and even the seemingly not so good) experiences in your life, the more likely you are to attract these circumstances back into your existence. Like attracts like and the universe is always working to bring you what you focus your attention on.

    Get active and Get Nourished

    Ideally, the next component of an ideal morning routine would be exercise. Whether you choose yoga, jogging, cardio, kick-boxing, or weight training. Whichever you prefer, find the activity you love, and do it consistently.

    Exercise increases energy levels, heart rate, and metabolism. It allows your body to fire back up after a (hopefully) long night of sedentary rest. Exercise also promotes healthy digestion. If you had a later than normal dinner the night before, or feel that you may have indulged on too much junk food, you’re encouraging your body’s natural cleansing process before you invite new breakfast foods into your system. Lastly, exercise has been shown time and time again to boost our confidence levels almost immediately. Look great. Feel great. Exercise will help you do that.

    Breaking the fast after a long night’s sleep is best done with nutrient-rich foods. Hydrating, vitamins rich, and fiber-rich foods are key first thing in the morning. I love enjoying large meals of juicy fruits like citrus, watermelon, cantaloupe, or papayas to promote healthy detoxification first thing. Otherwise, a green smoothie or plant-based protein smoothie is best. I love to combine frozen fruits, leafy green vegetables, healthy fats (like hemp, chia, or flax seeds) as well as superfood powders such as cacao, maca, spirulina, or barley grass juice powder.

    Enjoy some delicious and wholesome and set yourself up for a day of clean, nourishing eats. Take pride in the fact that you are the only person who determines how your morning (and the rest of your day) will unfold. Treat yourself to the best each morning, always. You deserve it.

    Do I need an eye cream?

    Often times when I'm starting a client on a new skincare regimen, I will only recommend two or three products so as not to overwhelm them and negate the whole process. A great skincare routine can absolutely exist with simply a cleanser, moisturizer, and occasional exfoliant. If you're willing to commit to more products and will use them daily, then I absolutely recommend an eye cream. It will often contain ingredients specifically designed to depuff and invigorate the skin, helping you look more awake.

    What are some of your favorite masks?

    My favorite masks are actually very simple ones you can make at home. My go-to mask is simply raw honey. It's naturally a humectant, which means it pulls water from the atmosphere bringing it into the skin, thereby aiding hydration. It's also naturally antiseptic and speeds healing in the skin, so it's great for acne and preventing scarring. A great honey-based mask is the Mermaid Mask from Leahlani Skincare. Another favorite mask is the Refine Clay Renewal Treatment from Blissoma. It doubles as a gentle exfoliant too!

    How often should I get a facial, realistically?

    I recommend my clients get facials every 4-6 weeks. Facials are a great time to check in with your esthetician as the skin can change seasonally and may need different products for different times of the year. What is even more important, however, than getting regular facials is having a regular daily skincare routine consisting of quality products. It's what you put on your skin each and every day that is truly going to make the biggest impact versus an occasional hour-long treatment.

    What is the best moisturizer you use in the winter?

    I have two that I use. The first is the Rose Vetiver Day Moisturizer from Evan Healy, and the second is the Lift Intelligent Energy Cream from Blissoma. In the evening I'll add a serum underneath my moisturizer for added hydration and repair overnight. My current favorite is the Pomegranate Repair Serum from Evan Healy. And for the body, you really can't beat straight-up organic coconut oil. I'll usually heat some up on the stove (since it's currently solid!) and add a few drops of essential oil for scent. My favorites are ylang-ylang and jasmine for their gorgeous floral fragrance- I swear it transports me to a tropical island every time. Then I'll pour that into a jar and keep it in the bathroom as my body moisturizer. It always goes with me when I travel too, so I have body oil for the beach and bikini shoots.


     
    What's the best face sunscreens?

    Since I don't use any kind of chemical sunscreens, I look for a mineral makeup that offers SPF coverage. If I'm going to be in extreme sun I opt for a hat to act as a physical barrier. My problem with chemical sunscreens is that they may potentially cause more harm than good- there is debate whether they can actually cause DNA damage to the skin. So while they may prevent a bad burn in the present moment, the long term effects could actually be damaging to the skin.

    As for the rest of your body, I suggest covering up when possible (I almost always bring a white long sleeve blouse with me to the beach), and looking for a zinc-based sunscreen. There are plenty available at any health food store and in my opinion, are the healthier option for your skin.

    What's your favorite self-tanner?

    Hands down, Eco Tan invisible tan. I use most of their other self-tanners as well, but the Invisible Tan, for me, is the most universal, easy to apply, and looks great on every skin tone. It's made with only organic and natural ingredients and is free of synthetic fragrance. The brand is based in Australia but you can find their products online through various shops.
